Hello everyone, I hope you've had a great start to the week! 💛
Today we're going to explore a really intriguing and fascinating topic: the subconscious mind.
Your subconscious mind is a remarkable asset that can be a guiding light to clarity and deep insights. It's the mental realm where your thoughts, memories, emotions, and dreams reside. It's also the wellspring of your dreams, those enigmatic journeys of the mind. There are many ways to access this part of our minds for clarity and insight. Meditation is one of them. Let’s find out more about how we can do this.
The 3 Minds in our Brain
In order to understand our subconscious mind, we need to understand a little more about how our brain functions. In our current times, scientists make use of three different notions to understand the complex and interconnected processes that occur in the human brain : the thinking mind, the emotional mind, and the subconscious mind.
1. The Thinking Mind
The thinking mind, often associated with conscious and rational thought, is the part of the mind where deliberate and analytical thinking takes place. This aspect of the mind is closely related to our waking consciousness and is often associated with the prefrontal cortex and other areas of the brain responsible for higher-order cognitive functions.
2. The Emotional Mind
The emotional mind refers to the part of the mind associated with emotions, feelings, and affective responses. Emotional responses are often driven by the limbic system and other brain structures responsible for processing and regulating emotions. This aspect of the mind can sometimes operate on a more subconscious or automatic level, influencing our thoughts and behavior without our explicit awareness.
3. The Subconscious Mind
And then we have the subconscious mind, which is a concept used to describe mental processes and content that occur below the level of conscious awareness. It's like a huge memory bank that stores everything that happens to you and includes various aspects of memory, beliefs, desires, and automatic processes that influence behavior and thought but may not be readily accessible to conscious thought.
Modern research in psychology and neuroscience has provided a nuanced understanding of the human mind, suggesting that the cognitive, emotional and subconscious processes of the brain are highly interconnected and often operate in parallel. Today, we know that our subconscious mind plays a very important role in our conscious lives. Accessing it can then be of great use to help us let go of patterns, habits and behaviours that no longer serve us and help us create the lives that we want.
Meditation : A Powerful Way to Access You Subconscious Mind
When you practice meditation, you can influence your brain waves and access more easily your subconscious mind. Techniques like mindfulness, visualization or deep breathing, can guide your brain into altered states of consciousness.
Research has shown that during meditation, brain wave patterns shift from the beta state (associated with active, analytical thinking) to the alpha and theta states, which are characterized by increased relaxation and heightened receptivity.
This alteration in brain waves can enable you to quiet the chatter of the conscious mind and delve deeper into your inner thoughts and feelings, ultimately making it easier to access the subconscious mind. In this heightened state of awareness, you may gain insights, tap into your intuition, and uncover hidden emotions and memories, all of which contribute to a more profound understanding of yourself and your thought processes.
But meditation is not the only tool that can help you do this.
I personally like to use meditation combined with other techniques that also increase the healthy connection between conscious and subconscious mind. Let’s check out what they are.
4 Other Proven Ways to Access Your Subconscious Mind
1. Creative Visualization
Envisioning the life you aspire to is a powerful means of establishing a connection with the subconscious mind. However, it's crucial to emphasize that visualization alone is not the sole factor. To maximize its effectiveness, you must infuse your visualizations with genuine emotions and feelings. For your subconscious, which continually communicates with your conscious mind, having a clear destination in mind is essential for its successful pursuit.
2. Journaling
Journaling offers an effective method for engaging with your subconscious mind while in a waking state. The essential technique is to engage in unfiltered, stream-of-consciousness writing. During this process, let your thoughts flow freely onto the pages, allowing anything and everything to find expression. It's in this uninhibited act of writing that you'll often unearth some of your most valuable insights and revelations.
3. Affirmations
The subconscious mind acquires knowledge through repetitive experiences and constant reinforcement. When you engage in daily affirmations, or even repeat them multiple times during the day, you are essentially ingraining the idea that a new narrative or belief is possible. Although the process of crafting and reciting affirmations occurs in our conscious, waking state, its impact extends deep into our subconscious, fostering a profound transformation in our beliefs and thought patterns.
4. Hypnosis
Even though I’ve never tried it myself, I know many close people who have gone through amazing personal transformation thanks to hypnosis. In these sessions, you’ll gain direct access to unfiltered evidence of your beliefs, rooted in past memories. Simultaneously, you embark on the process of rewiring neural pathways, enabling you to adopt more constructive and empowering belief systems.
Our mysterious journey of evolution has gifted us with distinct aspects of the human mind and to thrive in our own mental landscape, it is essential to grasp these different components, leverage their strengths and be mindful of their limitations.
Our subconscious minds store such a large amount of information (memories, dreams) and programs (habits, patterns) and control such a large portion of our daily actions that ignoring this treasure trove would be a missed opportunity in our lives.
So as we’ve seen, you can unlock your subconscious mind through meditation, a practice that facilitates the lowering of brainwave frequencies. But that's not all; you also have the power to refresh the data in your subconscious, by journaling, visualizing, using affirmations or hypnosis.
Today, tere are so many techniques available for us to use - isn’t it wonderful ?
