Hello friends, I hope you are all happy and well 😊
Our Meditaction sessions at the park are back, after a short Summer break, and it feels really good to be back. If you happen to be in Geneva, make sure you come join us in one of our next sessions to experience the benefits of group meditation!
Today, in this blog post, I want to bring about a reflection on what it means to be a good leader and how I believe meditation can be very useful to improve your leadership skills.
Being a good leader isn’t easy.
Lack of engagement, lack of satisfaction, absenteism and long-term illness… are only some of the problems that today’s leaders face more than they would probably wish.
What can a leader do about it ?
Effective leadership starts with self-awareness and the ability to cultivate a healthy mindset. A leader’s mindset directly impacts the ability to engage and motivate a team, foster innovation, and drive sustainable growth. It also requires prioritizing the needs of the team over personal gain and understanding and supporting others.
How many of us are truly capable of doing so ?
Being a good leader means taking full responsibility to create a positive impact on individuals, teams, and the overall organizational culture. And this is where meditation can help. Through the practice of meditation, leaders can build resilience, adaptability and emotional intelligence, which are crucial skills in today’s demanding and rapidly changing socio-economic landscape.
In their book « The Mind of The Leader : How to Lead Yourself, Your People, and Your Organization for Extraordinary Results » (which I totally recommend as your next reading!), Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter define three main qualities that make a great leader, that can all be cultivated through a meditation practice.
Let’s find out what they are.
3 essential qualities of today’s greatest leaders
Mindfulness
Mindfulness involves being fully present and aware in the moment, enabling leaders to make better decisions and navigate challenges effectively. Many people who embrace leadership roles, tend to function in autopilot and be distracted most of their time. Developping a focused and centered mind is then essential to any great leader.
Selflessness
Selflessness encourages leaders to prioritize the needs of their team and organization over personal gain, fostering a collaborative and engaged work environment. Selflessness has to walk hand in hand with true confidence, so that the leader can gain the respect and collaboration of the team members.
Compassion
Compassion emphasizes the importance of understanding and supporting the well-being of employees, leading to increased engagement, loyalty and productivity. Being kind and wise in every social interaction is a key factor for any leader and its team’s success. Long are gone the times in which compassion was associated with being weak !
Relearning How To Be Human
The working world needs more humanity, kindness and opportunity for real people to do their best work. All of this potential is already there, and great leaders know how to develop it. It’s time for most leaders to unlearn management as they’ve always known it and relearn how to be human.
Meditation can help you develop the awareness of noticing your mental states and to understand the behavior, reactions and emotions of the people you lead. Being able to do this is extremely important if you want to build a team of satisfied and motivated people that can thrive together and attain the best possible results.
Meditation will also help you become more attuned with your own intuition and true intentions, which will manifest greater transparency in your attitude as well as expanded courage to make difficult decisions when needed.
The more you practice it, the more your team will benefit from it and the more successful your collective endeavours will be.
Have you already integrated meditation into your life ?
If the answer is no, what is stopping you from doing it ?
Wishing you a happy, peaceful and very productive time with your team!
Love,
💛
